Working As A Hairdresser:
Part 2 T ake the time to really get to know people and listen to them. You will find that as your listening skills develop, your people skills will as well. Listening is something many people lack, and when you lack good listening skills, people are not as apt to feel comfortable with you. Also learn how to make eye contact with people when you talk to them. When you make eye contact, you are able to connect with people in a better way. Eye contact makes people feel important. It is a necessary part of interacting with others. When you fail to make eye contact, people will not feel warmth from you. It is a necessary part of communication, and it is something many people fail to do. Check our eye contact and make sure you are using it. If you are not, practice it so you will begin to feel more comfortable doing it. You can also work at making small talk with people. People who have people skills do not need to talk about serious issues with people. They can make small talk and have enjoyable conversations. This is something you can work on. That does not mean you cannot have serious conversations. It just means you also need to have the ability to keep things light. When people go to a hairdresser, they often want to talk about things that are funny and soothing, not serious. You also need to make sure you keep the tone of your voice friendly. Many people do not realise the tone of their voice can offend people. Often, people mean to be joking or conversing in a light hearted manner but manage to come across as mean because of the tone of their voice. Make sure your voice has a tone that is inviting. If this is not something that you come by naturally, work at it so you will be able to get the tone you need in order to make people feel comfortable with you. Also watch your facial expressions. Some people come across as angry because of their facial expressions, and they do not even realise it. In order to watch this, talk to yourself in the mirror. See how your expressions look when you say things. You may not realise a scowl that you have been wearing. Try to keep your face pleasant so people will feel comfortable. By doing these things, you will be able to improve your people skills. When you improve these skills, you will then be one step closer to a career as a hairdresser. Tact When you are a hairdresser, tact is incredibly important. You cannot let someone know they look awful, and you cannot point out a big nose or ears that would look bad with a certain cut. Instead, you have to learn how to communicate while using tact. Without tact, your customers will not come back. You want your customers to feel comfortable asking you for your opinion. If you hurt their feelings when they ask, they are not going to have that comfortable feeling they want. Always make a client feel good, no matter what. You can tell them ways you can make them look even better, but never make them feel as if they have been walking around looking terrible. Tact is something that is very hard for people to get. Typically, people are not born with tact. They have to learn it as they age. Even though it is difficult, it does not mean you cannot master the art of tact. Take the time to listen to yourself when you talk to people. When you tell people things, do you hurt their feelings, or do you say things in a way that is not hurtful? Also, do you volunteer your opinion too often? There is a line between being helpful and hurtful, and tact sits right on that line. You have to be able to use tact if you are going to be a good hairdresser. If you are lacking in the tact department, be sure to work on it so you do not offend your customers. On the same lines as tact, don’t offer your opinion when people do not want it. If someone is not interested in what you think, don’t tell them. There are some clients you will come across that do not want any input in their choices, and they will think you have crossed a line if you give them any. When you learn how to read people, you will understand who these people are. Details Details are also important to a hairdresser. If a hairdresser does not have an eye for details, she is certain to upset a few customers. She must be able to notice any inconsistencies with the hair and fix them before the client leaves her chair. She does not want a lack of attention to detail to lose customers for her. Cutting hair is a very detailed job. You have to be able to see any long hairs and make sure that everything is even. If something is not working, you need to be able to notice that. You do not want to get in a situation where you messed up a cut or a colour because you missed some important details It is essential that you are able to notice all of the details before you start cutting hair for a living. You will need to develop a keen eye that will carry over into your career as a hairdresser. This is something you can learn. You need to have inner patience and take your time. While a hairdresser does want to work quickly, there is a difference between working quickly and rushing the process. You can work quickly while still taking the time in order to see all of the details you need. Your customers will appreciate the time you took in order to make sure their hair is right. Nothing frustrates a customer more than getting home, looking in the mirror and realizing their hair is uneven. They will make a trip back to the salon, and they won’t be as friendly as they were the first time. When you don’t pay attention to details, you can lose time and money. When you rush through a cut, it actually takes more time to fix it than it would if you would have paid attention to details initially. Therefore, take your time and get it right the first time every time. Typically, there are two types of people. There are people who pay attention to details, and there are people who do not pay attention to details. The people who do not pay attention rush through and just do the job as quickly as they can without worrying about anything. Start paying attention to the details in your day to day life. Take the time out to really see everything that is in front of you. That will help you perform your job as a hairdresser much better.
